Seraphim Blue Diamond Auction?
Recent mentions of an elusive Golconda blue diamond from the turban ornament of the Nizam dynasty of Hyderabad, has alerted diamond collectors, testing laboratories and even the auction houses. Referred to as the Seraphim Blue Diamond, the precious stone has yet to show up at any high profile auction.
It is therefore understandable that, the May 2025 Christie's Golconda blue diamond in Geneva, is being related to the Seraphim Blue Diamond - but that guess is surely not true. The 23.24 carat Golconda blue diamond scheduled for Christie's 14 May 2025 auction in Geneva, is surely not the elusive Seraphim Blue Diamond that, has been mentioned in recent times.

The Christie's auction will no doubt generate much interest, the precious stone referred to as the Golconda Blue diamond, has its provenance tracked since 1920. A fabulous gemstone without doubt. However there are some very clear differences between the Golconda Blue Diamond that is the topic of a Christie's auction, and the rumored Seraphim Blue Diamond.
The Seraphim Blue Diamond is believed to have been worn in a turban ornament by the first Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah 1 who ruled the state of Hyderabad from 1724 to 1748. This was the start of the Nizam dynasty that reigned, until 1948 and spanned a total of 7 Nizams. We keep referring to the Seraphim Blue Diamond as being 'elusive' as it has still to be sent to an auction or, showcased in a high profile museum for general viewing.
To put the time frame into perspective, renowned auction house Christie's was formed in the year 1766, by James Christie. The provenance of the Seraphim Blue Diamond if proved to be real, would imply a provenance that starts somewhere around the year 1724. That is when the rule of the first Nizam of Hyderabad began, it also marked the start of the Nizam Dynasty.
And if we were to consider the 23.25 carat size being referred to in the Christie's May 2025 Golconda blue diamond auction, the valuable stone would be way too large to be set in a traditional turban ornament, worn in those times. The Seraphim Blue Diamond has shied away from the limelight, it would be fair to estimate its weight, at around 6 to 8 carats. Turban ornaments in those days generally haloed the center gem or diamond, with a row of smaller diamonds. So the 6 to 8 carat weight, seems reasonable.
True that the color and clarity of the Seraphim Blue Diamond could probably, match or even outdo the blue diamond that is due to be auctioned by Christie's - the 23.24 carats claimed for the Golconda blue diamond, clearly differentiates it from the Seraphim Blue Diamond.
According to the current information available, the 23+ carat Golconda Blue Diamond, has a recorded history (provenance) since the year 1920. If the Seraphim Blue Diamond does make an appearance and has its story verified and certified by a reputed diamond testing lab, the provenance of the amazing diamond would begin centuries before that of the Golconda Blue Diamond.
At this point in time focus has expectedly shifted to the Christie's auction. Stories and claims related to the Seraphim Blue Diamond will continue until, the piece makes its debut at a high profile auction.
